Chapter 456 Anti-aircraft Bunker
Chapter 456 Anti-aircraft Bunker
The two spent more than a month leisurely in the cabin.
One night, the rain suddenly intensified, and the wind also rushed in from all directions at the same time.
The wooden wall swayed slightly in the wind, especially the window made of a few thin planks, which rattled loudly in the wind.
Xu Xiaoyan got up, walked to the window in the dark, and reached out to push the window panel that had been blown open.
The window panel opens outwards and is propped up by a wooden stick, but the wind is so strong that the stick has been blown over several times.
She pulled the window panel back, propped it up with a stick again, and then placed a stone at the base of the stick.
When she pulled her hand back, her fingertips were sore from the cold, and rainwater splashed into her face as it blew in through the cracks in the window.
I had barely lain down for a quarter of an hour when, with a loud "bang," the window panel was blown open again.
This time it was even more violent than the last. The window panel slammed against the outer wall of the wooden house, making a loud noise that even woke up Blue Moon.
Blue Moon mumbled something in the darkness, turned over, pulled the sleeping bag over her head, and fell asleep again.
Xu Xiaoyan got up again. This time, instead of using a wooden stick, she found a thick hemp rope in the corner of the wall and tied the window panel tightly to the door frame with three knots.
The rope dug into the wooden board, making a faint "creaking" sound, but the window panel finally stopped moving.
She stood by the window, listening to the sounds outside, her brows furrowing deeply.
This storm is too fierce. If it continues, I don't know if the wooden house can hold up.
Are the supplies at the trading post enough? How will the people in the camp, those living in tents, get through tonight?
She lay back in her sleeping bag, her mind racing with ideas, and drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Xu Xiaoyan crawled out of her sleeping bag, pushed open the door of the wooden cabin, and was hit by a huge force that almost knocked her over.
She quickly grabbed the door frame, squeezed out sideways, and gasped as she looked out at the world outside.
The ground was a mess, and the small, crooked tree in front of the wooden house had been uprooted, with wet soil still clinging to its roots.
The tarpaulin was blown dozens of meters away by the wind and hung on a clump of bushes, fluttering in the wind.
On a distant hillside, several dead trees were snapped in half by the wind, their gray stumps particularly glaring.
Lan Yue also came out, standing behind Xu Xiaoyan with her mouth open, unable to close it for a long time.
"How strong is the wind?" Lan Yue's voice was broken by the wind, and Xu Xiaoyan could only make out a few words.
Xu Xiaoyan did not answer. She walked around the wooden house, inspecting every wall, every pillar, and every plank of the roof.
Fortunately, the cabin was built with sturdy timbers, the foundation was dug deep, and the pillars were firmly buried. Although the wooden walls swayed slightly in the wind, the overall structure was not damaged.
The two sat on the threshold, staring blankly at the world outside, which had been ravaged by the wind.
"Xiao Yan," Lan Yue asked, "how long do you think this wind will last?"
Xu Xiaoyan did not answer; she raised her head and looked at the sky.
"God knows," Xu Xiaoyan stood up and walked to the window on the side of the wooden house that hadn't been damaged by the wind.
"Let's not go out for now," Xu Xiaoyan said, turning and walking back to the wooden house, closing the door tightly and propping it shut with a thick wooden stick.
"Reorganize everything in the house, block up any drafts, and try to get through this period."
Lan Yue nodded, stood up, and moved a few planks from the corner to start nailing the window shut.
Outside the wooden house, the wind was still blowing, and several more trees had fallen on the distant hillside.
Every one or two hours, Xu Xiaoyan and Lan Yue had to get up and check the wires on the windows to see if they were loose.
Check if the tarpaulin on the roof has been torn, and if the wooden sticks behind the door have been blown down by the wind.
Unexpectedly, the wind and rain intensified in the middle of the night.
The loudspeaker, which no one had ever expected, suddenly blared at that moment:
"Please note, everyone hurry up and pack your belongings. Gather at the respective trading points within half an hour to prepare for the transfer to the air-raid shelter."
Both of them froze, and Lan Yue looked at Xu Xiaoyan in surprise:
"Anti-aircraft bunker? Did I hear that right? If they had this, why didn't they let us in sooner? Did they want to watch us turn into savages?"
Xu Xiaoyan shook her head. "There must have been some reason why they wouldn't let us in before. I suspect the weather conditions will get even worse, so the military had no choice but to open up the facilities."
After saying that, the two stopped talking and began to pack their things.
Upon seeing the dried mushrooms, Blue Moon let out a wail, "Xiao Yan, what do we do? There are so many, we can't possibly carry them all!"
She reached out to grab the bags, but as soon as she picked one up, another fell to the ground. She was flustered and her eyes were red.
Xu Xiaoyan was tying up the iron pot on the stove with rope when she heard this. She looked up and glanced at the pile of bags in the corner.
Dried pine mushrooms, dried green-headed mushrooms, dried lilac mushrooms, and dried maitake mushrooms—more than twenty bags, almost half a person's height—this is the result of their hard work over several days.
Xu Xiaoyan advised, "Take the most valuable items first, such as dried pine mushrooms and dried lilac mushrooms. Take the rest if you can, and don't worry about the rest if you can't."
She walked over and squatted down next to Lan Yue, then reached into the pile of bags and picked out the four most valuable ones.
Two bags of dried pine mushrooms and two bags of dried lilac mushrooms were stuffed into the side pocket of Blue Moon's backpack, which was already bulging to its limit.
"What about the others?" Lan Yue looked at the remaining pile of bags, her eyes filled with reluctance.
"Just leave it there," Xu Xiaoyan stood up. "Life is more valuable than mushrooms."
Lan Yue seemed unwilling to give up, so she grabbed another bag of dried goods and stuffed it into her backpack, but her backpack was already full.
She took the sleeping bag off her backpack, stuffed the dry goods inside, and then tied the sleeping bag to the outside.
Two hands weren't enough, so I used my teeth to bite one end of the binding tape, pulling with my right hand and pressing with my left. My teeth ached from biting so hard, but I finally managed to tighten the package.
"You go first, I'll be right there." Xu Xiaoyan pushed the door open a crack, and the wind and rain immediately poured in through the gap, stinging her face.
Blue Moon hesitated for a moment, wanting to say something, but the loudspeaker at the trading point started shouting again, "Please hurry, the assembly will end in fifteen minutes, and latecomers will not be accepted!"
She could only carry the backpack that bulged like a small mountain on her back, with a tied sleeping bag hanging around her neck and a bag of dried mushrooms in her arms, as she turned and walked towards the trading point.
Xu Xiaoyan closed the wooden door, immediately put all the remaining dried mushrooms into her spatial storage, and then walked out of the small wooden house with her large and small bags on her back.
The lights at the trading point grew brighter and brighter through the rain, and more and more people gathered around.
Some people were shouting, some were crying, and some stood silently with blank and numb expressions on their faces.
Xu Xiaoyan quickly found Lan Yue in the crowd. She had squeezed to the front of the line and was standing on tiptoe, looking around.
Seeing Xu Xiaoyan walk over, he let out a long breath and relaxed from his tense state.
"Why are you so slow!" Lan Yue grabbed her arm and pulled her to her side. "I thought something had happened to you!"
