Chapter 269 - 270: Running into a Ghost

Chapter 269 - 270: Running into a Ghost

In Su Nian’s line of sight was a ghost with fiery red hair and a face covered in cracked scars. Its skin looked as though it had been horribly burned, leaving it wrinkled and puckered.

It was currently clinging to the woman’s back, incessantly whispering something into her ear.

Trailing behind the little girl was an Evil Ghost, completely wreathed in black mist.

’How on earth did these two get mixed up with ghosts?’

Su Nian frowned, puzzled.

The woman continued to berate the little girl, her hand twisting the child’s ear with considerable force.

She was even shouting, "I really don’t understand what young people are thinking these days! Always making things up just to lie to their parents."

"What’s the point of that? Huh? What’s the point?"

Her emotional state was exceptionally volatile. It wasn’t just Su Nian who felt something was wrong—even the viewers in the livestream chat noticed the difference.

[Why do I feel like she’s just like that psycho from before who killed his wife?]

[I had my mom come watch, and she said the woman is right. Fam, what do I do?]

[Thank god my mom, as crazy as she is, isn’t this extreme. She at least gives me some face in public.]

It was then that Su Nian noticed that the louder the woman screamed, the redder the ghost on her back became.

The Red Ghost was now so red it was almost black.

The little girl beside her, meanwhile, grew increasingly silent.

The ghost behind her, as if sensing something, fixed its gaze on the Red Ghost behind the woman.

But this Red Ghost was incredibly bizarre. It stared right back at the other ghost, its lips pulling into a terrifying grin.

No one but Su Nian was aware of the silent clash between the two ghosts.

Seeing the woman’s voice growing louder, Su Nian cut her off.

Su Nian impatiently tapped the payment QR code beside her. "Please pay the divination fee first," she said.

The woman’s attitude toward Su Nian was surprisingly decent. She first shot a venomous glare at her daughter.

Then she let go of the girl to pay the fee. Only at that moment did the girl get a chance to breathe.

Even after paying, the woman’s expression remained foul.

She pulled out a chair for herself and plopped down into it.

Pointing at her daughter, who stood with her head bowed in silence, she prepared to continue her lament to Su Nian without missing a beat.

It was as if she wanted to announce to the whole world just how deeply she had been wronged.

"Master, just listen to how absurd this is. My daughter... she’s a student, and she’s claiming there are ghosts in her school! That’s just ridiculous, isn’t it?"

[Ugh, I’m so bored of this. Can she talk about something else?]

[OMG, no wonder people complain about middle-aged women. This is just suffocating.]

[I swear I’ll never become a person like that. It’s terrifying, all that constant nagging.]

[First time seeing such a ridiculous mother. I have to say, my own mom is a hundred times better than this.]

The woman didn’t believe her daughter had encountered ghosts in the first place.

She was even more dismissive when she saw that the fortune-telling master her daughter was so excited about was a beautiful woman like Su Nian.

She was self-righteously convinced that her daughter had simply made it all up because she didn’t want to go to school.

But Su Nian had always been haughty, her "pampered young heiress" persona deeply ingrained.

Seeing that the woman was about to start rambling endlessly again, Su Nian slapped the table impatiently.

It looked like just a light tap on the table.

But the tremendous sound it produced made the woman freeze.

She stared at the table, stunned, not understanding how such a light tap could produce such a loud noise.

Su Nian shot her a sideways glance, her expression one of extreme irritation.

"What is it you want to say? You’ve already done all the talking for her, so why did you come to see me? To watch you put on a performance of you yelling at her?"

The woman was dumbfounded. She hadn’t expected Su Nian to have such an attitude.

The woman had a strange personality. She could verbally tear her own daughter to shreds.

But in front of others, she was somewhat shy and hesitant to speak.

Su Nian ignored her, turning her gaze instead to the little girl who kept her head bowed.

Su Nian’s expression softened slightly.

She asked the girl, "So, what kind of trouble did you run into?"

The little girl timidly raised her head, glanced at Su Nian, then quickly lowered it again.

She whispered, "There really is a ghost in our dorm room. Master, I’m not lying..."

But she had barely started to speak when the woman beside her exploded.

In that instant, it was as if the girl wasn’t her daughter, but her mortal enemy.

She leaped to her feet, one hand on her hip, the other raised as if to strike the girl across the face.

Her voice boomed with confidence as she raged, "You’re lying again! Where in the world are there ghosts? All the other students in the world are perfectly fine, so why are you the only one who runs into ghosts?!"

"If you ask me, you just don’t want to study! You’re just trying to run away from your bad grades!"

The fragile wall of courage the girl had just built was instantly shattered by the verbal assault.

Looking utterly defeated, she lowered her head, pressed her lips together, and retreated into silence.

Her mother, however, was thrilled. A triumphant smirk appeared on her face, as if she were a general who had just won a great victory.

[Oh man, this is really hard to watch. What is even going on?]

[OMG, can someone please reach through the screen and give that woman a couple of slaps for me? I’m itching to do it myself.]

[All I can say is, this poor girl.]

[For real. So unlucky to be stuck with a mother like that.]

What was even more infuriating was that after berating her daughter, the woman actually shot Su Nian a look.

She seemed quite proud of herself...

Su Nian shook her head, her expression frigid, and spoke to the woman in a cold voice.

"Your name is Xu Lanzhi. You are forty-one years old. Three years into your marriage, you divorced your husband over irreconcilable differences, and you’ve raised your daughter alone ever since."

"Your financial luck has always been good, and you’re very career-driven. Your only weakness is in your family connections. Your parents died young, and you grew up by yourself."

"But you were also recently diagnosed with a kidney problem."

The woman, who had dismissed Su Nian as just another pretty influencer who scammed people with her looks, was now completely stunned.

She hadn’t held out any hope from the start, but now she was shocked to discover that Su Nian actually had some real skill.

Her eyes lit up in an instant, but as if by reflex...

...her mouth unconsciously began to badmouth her own daughter.

"Well, what do you know. I never expected this worthless girl... For someone so stupid to actually find a real master, I guess that’s just her good luck."

"Master, please, take a look for me. What is wrong with her? She’s moping around all day, half-dead. You tell me if she’s really seen a ghost. If you ask me, she’s just being dramatic. I mean, what century are we in? How can there be ghosts everywhere?"

The woman said all this as if it were a matter of course, not feeling she was in the wrong at all.

But Su Nian just replied with a cold face.

"Do you have any idea that you’re the one who’s haunted?"
